Jane Blanchard interviews Carol
Reese,
queen mother of the Purple Sunset Red Hat chapter. Carol belongs to
four local Red Hat groups. Their main responsibilities, she says, are
to “go out, have fun and be yourself.” They take those responsibilities
very seriously:
The Red Hat Society is the largest women’s social group in the
world. It was founded in 1998 for women approaching the age
of 50 and
beyond. As of July 2009, there are nearly 40,000 registered members and
almost 24,000 chapters in the United States and 25 other countries.
This week’s female musician:
Our musician this week is BETH HAMMER
(bass &
vocals), The Velvet Hammer, (a name given to her by Bluesman Al
Fuller). Beth was raised in a musical family. At the age of five she
began studying accordion, and later learned to play organ, clarinet,
saxophone and flute, but the bass is now her main love. She also sings
and writes blues tunes. She is the host of Blues With The Velvet Hammer
at WSLR 96.5 FM each Tuesday Night from 7 to 9 p.m..
