July 09, 2009: Capitalism vs. Feminism: Are they compatible?: Host Jane Blanchard talks Verna Safran.

VERNA SAFRAN is a  teacher, journalist and activist.    In addition to 40 years as a high school English teacher in New York City, she taught Creative Writing at Western Connecticut State College and Brooklyn College.  As a freelance journalist, she's had articles on health and women's issues published in The New Republic, The Nation, Glamour and Women's World magazines.  Verna's also a successful writer for children, with three professionally produced musical shows and numerous stories
published in children's magazines.  She enjoys tutoring children in Reading and working with disabled children in the Asolo's Kaleidescope program.  A member of NOW, she was active in the women's movement of the late 1960's, organizing consciousness-raising groups,  and giving talks about women's rights.  Currently she's teaching a course, "The Sisterhood; a HERstory of the Women's Movement" at the Lifelong Learning Academy.
