Laura Gilkey serves on the Board of Directors for Florida
Friends of Midwives, and is the Florida Coordinating Ambassador for The
Birth Survey: The Transparency in Maternity Care Project. She is an
endorser of The Mother-Friendly Childbirth Initiative and a member of
the Informed Consent and Refusal Committee for the Coalition for
Improving Maternity Care Services. She is also on the Planning and
Evaluation Committee for the Healthy Start Coalition of Sarasota
County, whose mission is to improve the health and well-being of
Sarasota's pregnant women, infants, and small
children.
Sonia Pressman Fuentes: is pioneering feminist and one of the
initiators of the Second Wave of the women's rights movement in this
country. She is an author, public speaker, retired attorney. She is.
She, as a representative of the local NOW chapter, is coordinating with
Laura on the upcoming panel discussion Maternal Health Care in the 21st
Century: Sarasota and Beyond

Carmela.
Radio Free Carmela is the featured musician. She is also going to be
playing at An evening with Ina May Gaskin, the Mother of Modern
Midwifery at the Hyatt Regency Boathouse on Nov 1st to help support the
Florida Friends of Midwives. Carmela Pedicini has assisted Midwives for
over 10 years and has been witness over 200 births in Sarasota Florida.
During these years she has spent time in various health care settings
from hospitals to private practice. Thanks to this broad spectrum of
education pertaining to women in their childbearing years, she
continues with strong conviction to be an advocate for holistic health
care during the prenatal period through birth. "I believe the majority
of women have all they need within themselves to birth their children,
I bless the midwives daily for reminding us of this with their loving
support and
guidance."
